Sloughi Breed description: Character & Co
Sloughi
Facts & Origin
The Arabian Greyhound or Sloughi is an elegant and very old breed of greyhound.
The origin of the Sloughi
The Berber tribes of the Maghreb region bred the Sloughi dog breed for hunting. To this day, these dogs live very closely with their proud owners. Originally they sat in front of their masters on horseback for the hunt. If they had spotted the game (gazelles and hares), they jumped out of the saddle and hunted it.
Animals very similar to today's type have already been found on inscriptions and grave paintings from ancient Egypt. The oldest documented traces of this dog date back to 1500 BC.
To this day, the Arabian Greyhound is a national symbol, proudly held in honor. Although it is also found in Algeria, Libya and Tunisia, Morocco is exclusively responsible for the breed standard. Occasionally, this dog is also referred to as "Saluki", which is simply a regional variation of the original Arabic spelling.
Besides the shepherd dog Aïdi, it is the only officially recognized dog breed from Morocco. The FCI lists it under Standard No. 188, Group 10: Greyhounds and Section 3: Shorthaired Greyhounds.

Attitude, character and temperament of the breed
The typical character traits of the Sloughi
Like all sighthounds, the Sloughi is extremely intelligent, sensitive and cuddly. It belongs in equally gentle hands with a lot of dog sense and a strong sense for sports.
It must be able to run regularly in order to stay physically fit and healthy. There are hobby dog races for this even here in German-speaking countries. If it is well trained, it can of course also pursue its urge to move in the open field. Afterwards the dog is the dearest family dog and wants to be close to its humans.
Please only acquire such a dog if you really have a lot of time and desire to spend with it. It is usually very obedient, but does not tolerate a harsh command tone. You must lead this dog with sensitivity and intelligence.

Breeding, acquisition and keeping
The Sloughi breeding is something special. These dogs are rarely offered. The few breeders only give Sloughi puppies to select owners. If you are interested in a Sloughi, you should inquire at the German Sloughi Club or at the Austrian Shubah al warda kennel.
The breed characteristics of the Sloughi
The Sloughi is a typical greyhound. Very large, elegant and delicate. It is one of the fastest dogs in the world and is licensed for professional dog racing. Due to its closeness to humans, it is also suitable as a family dog for sensitive and sporty people.
Appearance and coat
The Sloughi is very long-legged and gracefully built. It shows beautiful coat markings in uni or bicolor. The coat is extremely thin and sensitive. In our latitudes it can freeze easily in winter, if it has to stay on the leash or stands around.
The body is dry and finely marked. The tail is long and thin. It often carries it slightly tucked under his belly. The Arabian Greyhound may have a remarkably long neck. The head is delicate, but always well proportioned and in keeping with the rest of the conformation.
