Chippiparai - non-recognized Indian dog breed in profile

The Chippiparai is a dog breed that is not recognized by the FCI. However, it is registered in the Kennel Club of India, which represents the FCI in India. These four-legged dogs, also known as Thanjavur dogs, are very elegant and seduce with an absolutely proud look. No wonder that these dogs were the declared favorites of Indian princes and nobles. In our latitudes, Chippiparais are very rare and even in India itself, the pure bloodline of these noble dogs is in danger of dying out soon, as many breeders like to cross them with other dog breeds.

What is the origin of Chippiparais?

The Chippiparai originates from India and is an Indian greyhound whose ancestors are probably the Salukis. The exact home of these quadrupeds is Tamil Nadu, where they were bred for the royal families of Tirunelveli and Madurai. Chippiparais are said to be closely related to Salukis and Sloughis from Egypt, which reached India by sea at that time.

Chippiparais were also used in manorial hunting. They are fast hunters and also retrieve excellently.
