Origin of the Husky

Originally the Alaskan Husky comes from the USA, more exactly from Alaska. There one began already in the 20th century to cross native "Indian dogs" with polar dogs or Siberian huskies. With it the inhabitants living there wanted to breed the perfect sledge dog for races. Above all, the bred huskies should withstand the prevailing weather conditions and the strenuous sled races.

Typical character traits

Because of their friendly nature, Huskies are perfect family dogs. They are loyal and love to be part of a pack - a family. The four-legged dog from the north of the USA has a very gentle and obedient character, so the dog breed is also ideal for families with children.

Both the appearance and the character of the Alaskan husky is very similar to that of a wolf. Huskies very rarely bark, for example, but communicate with their peers through howling or singing.

Ideal attitude

Sled dogs differ in their attitude from other conspecifics. They have a pronounced hunting instinct and are more oriented towards a life in the pack than comparatively a poodle or a sheepdog.

If you want to get a Husky, you should be aware that this dog breed is very lively and needs a lot of exercise. A Husky needs several hours of exercise a day and is definitely not a couch potato. Huskies love to move freely in nature and explore new routes.

Huskies are also stubborn and should therefore be strictly trained. It is important to set limits for the dogs and to show them who is "master" in the pack. Therefore, a good and disciplined education is very important for the very lively husky.

Common diseases of the Alaskan Husky

Huskies reach an average age of 12 to 15 years. They count as very robust dogs and are basically not very susceptible to diseases. The most common disease found in the dog breed is "zinc reactive dermatosis". This is a skin disease that results from a zinc deficiency. Typical symptoms of the disease are: Itching, red skin and furring.

Like all large dogs, huskies can also suffer from joint pain as they get older.

How much does the dog breed cost and what should be considered when breeding?

When buying a dog, make sure that it comes from a purebred litter. Purebred litter means that your dog's pedigree can be traced back at least five generations. This is particularly important, as good breeders only use healthy dogs for breeding, in order to be able to exclude possible hereditary diseases in the young dogs.

A breeder's duties also include administering necessary vaccinations and worming treatments as well as implanting a chip. Certified breeders work exclusively transparently and are also regularly controlled in order to be able to guarantee the best possible keeping of the dogs.

Huskies could not be more different. The dogs can have light, dark or even multicoloured coats and the appearance depends on the breed. However, black and white or black and grey huskies are the most common. Alas Huskies from Alaska can be stocky built and weigh up to 50 kg or they can have a rather petite appearance. However, the dogs have one thing in common: strong paws, thick, weatherproof fur and the tireless will to cope with long and exhausting races. Less important is the appearance of the dog breed, but much more the performance of the dogs.

Breed characteristics

The Husky is a medium-sized dog with very dense and medium-length hair. Its outer coat is very robust and water-repellent. Its ears are small and upright. The light blue eyes are also a typical feature of this dog breed. However, these can also be brown, amber, green or even 2-colored.
