Pudelpointer
Facts & Origin
Pudelpointer - a breed description
The Pudelpointer is a hardy hunting dog that is most comfortable in the outdoors. The rare dogs are a loyal companion and show great skill in hunting wild animals. Especially among hunters, the dog breed is very popular.
Origin and use of the Pudelpointer
The Pudelpointer originates from Germany. The first specimens of the dog breed are said to have originated accidentally and inspired many hunters. In 1881, dog breeder Sigismund Freiherr von Zedlitz und Neukirch began to deliberately cross Poodles and Pointers. The goal was to create a working dog that combined the hunting instinct of the Poodle and the fine nose of the Pointer. Since the Pudelpointer successfully hunted for wild animals in the forest, on fields and even in the water, it was soon considered an "all-round talent". To this day, the dog breed serves primarily as a hunting dog.
Breed characteristics of the Pudelpointer
The Pudelpointer was officially recognized by the FCI in 1959. The dog breed is classified in group 7 "Pointing Dogs", section 1 "Continental Pointing Dogs", subsection 1 "Braque".

Attitude of the Pudelpointer
Hunting is in the blood of the Pudelpointer. He needs a lot of exercise and loves long walks in nature. You should therefore only choose this dog breed if you can offer your four-legged friend an active life in a rural environment. In order to keep your Pudelpointer mentally active, it needs to be kept busy. If it is not kept as a hunting dog, dog sports (e.g. tracking and retrieving games) are a good alternative. Since the Pudelpointer is obedient and intelligent, it learns quickly if it is trained with the necessary patience and consistency.

Please note that many breeders will only give a Pudelpointer puppy into the hands of a trained hunter who has already had experience with hunting dogs.
Appearance and coat of the Poodle Pointer
The Pudelpointer is a sturdy dog with an almost square build. The long, broad head, strong neck, tight-fitting shoulders, straight, muscular back, and long, muscular legs make it appear large and graceful. Since the dark nose has wide-open nostrils, the dog's sense of smell is particularly well developed. The ears of the Poodle Pointer lie close to the head and the jaw is strong. Its eyes are large, dark, and set to the side. The tail is carried straight at the height of the back and is usually docked.
The coat of the Poodle Pointer is a mixture of close-lying, medium-length rough hair and a dense undercoat that protects the dog in bad weather conditions. It is brown, black, or drought colored with small white markings.
Size of the Poodle Pointer
The poodle pointer belongs to the large dog breeds. The shoulder height of the male dog is 60 to 68 cm. Bitches are slightly smaller than their male counterparts and reach a shoulder height of 55 to 63 cm.
Weight of the Poodle Pointer
The weight of the Poodle Pointer depends on the size of the animal. A fully grown Pudelpointer weighs 20 to 30 kg. Bitches are slightly lighter than males.
