Podenco Ibicenco
Facts & Origin
Podenco Ibicenco - in the breed portrait
The Podenco Ibicenco has become a widespread dog breed in Germany in recent years. Especially the Podenco Ibicenco mediation from Spain by animal welfare organizations has contributed to this.
What is the origin of the Podenco Ibicenco?
The historical origin of this dog breed is not clear. It is assumed that the "Tesem" is the progenitor of the Podenco Ibicenco. This is also considered with the Pharaoh dog (Kelb tal-Fenek). To this theory also belongs that through the Phoenicians this type of dog was spread in the Mediterranean area.
In the other thesis it is assumed that these dog breeds have developed from the Mediterranean pariah dogs. The physical differences are due to the regional conditions.
Its original home is the Spanish Balearic Islands. Probably starting from the island of Ibiza. This island is responsible for the naming. In the meantime, this dog breed is also represented on the Canary Islands and the entire Spanish mainland and there preferably in Catalonia.
In 1931 Spain applied for the registration of the breed standard of the Podenco Ibicenco at the FCI. The breed standard No. 89 was documented in group 5, section 7, at the FCI. At that time and for many years, this dog breed was also erroneously called the Pharaoh Dog. Accordingly, there were two breed standards under different names for the same dog. This mistake was corrected by the FCI in 1977 and the name Pharaoh Dog is only valid for the Kelb tal-Fenek from Malta.
What are the breed characteristics of the Ibiza Dog?
A striking feature of this long-legged, greyhound-like dog is its large prick ears. With its far-reaching and elegant trot, the Podenco Ibicenco steals the show from many of its peers. In addition, each representative of this breed has a white tail tip. This dog breed is a hunter by passion and can reach a high
