What is the origin of the Black Mouth Cur?

The Black Mouth Cur comes from the USA. Its exact origin is unclear, there are two theories. One says that it comes from the mountains of Tennessee. The other one assumes its origin in Mississippi, both southern states of the USA. When the European settlers colonized North America in the 17th century, the Black Mouth Cur took over important functions as a hunting and guard dog, for example for hunting raccoons or squirrels. It is believed to have originated from the crossing of European dogs with native dogs of North America. As far as functions are concerned, they are true all-rounders and are also suitable as herding or family dogs.
