The Patterdale Terrier, or Black Terrier, was originally kept as a hunting dog. Today, the very rare breed is mainly kept as a companion dog in America. In Germany and Austria, the Patterdale Terrier is not classified as a list dog, as it is neither a separate breed nor a list dog mix.

What is the origin of Patterdale Terriers?

The Patterdale Terrier originated in northern England. It is one of the oldest terrier breeds that were used for construction hunting. The small, robust dog was created by crossing Staffordshire Terriers and Bull Terriers. In 1975 the first dogs were exported to North America. In 1995 the Patterdale was recognized as an independent breed by the United Kennel Club and the ADBA (American Dog Breeders Association). Until today the FCI has not recognized the Patterdale Terrier as an own dog breed. In Germany the terrier is still extremely rare.

What are typical character traits of Patterdale Terriers?

The Patterdale Terrier is a typical hunting dog. If it gets the opportunity, it likes to pursue smaller animals. Its self-confidence is strongly developed. It makes his own decisions and is stubborn. It should always be kept on a leash when out on walks. Once its hunting instinct is aroused, it cannot be called off. In general, the terrier is a good family dog who is especially affectionate with children. Since it is a real bundle of energy, it can play for hours. However, the intelligent dog must be well exercised physically and mentally. Long walks are a must. If you leave it alone in a garden, it starts digging holes. Usually it also quickly figures out how to dig under the fence to make its own excursions. When training this intelligent dog, it is important to be especially consistent. It is a real challenge for the owner and is absolutely no beginner dog. If the terrier is not hunted, it should be exercised by dog sports. When meeting other males the Patterdale Terrier reacts dominantly. Rabbits, guinea pigs and cats are regarded as prey and hunted.

The external appearance of the dogs is very different, because during breeding, the main emphasis was placed on serviceability. The ears are semi-erect, the upper part folds forward. The neck is well muscled and goes into a strong back. The tail is set high and carried upwards.
