General information about the Brazilian Terrier

As the name already says, the Terrier Brasileiro originates from Brazil. It is assigned to FCI group 3 and section 1, under standard number 341. The small dogs reach a height at withers between 33 and 40 cm, with a weight of maximum 10 kg. The Brazilian Terrier, as it is often called in German-speaking countries, has a sunny disposition. The terrier is well suited as a guard dog, due to its tendency to yap, but also as a lively family and companion dog. Originally, the Brazilian was used as a hunting dog.

Origin and history

Contrary to many expectations, the Brazilian Terrier did not originate in Brazil. It originated from different terrier species, which were brought to Brazil by students. There they were first kept only in the city and later the small dogs mixed with the local dog breeds. By crossing the terrier-like dogs and the native bitches and males, the Brazilian Terrier was created in the course of time. In its veins flows the blood of Jack Russell Terriers, Chihuahuas and that of the German Pinscher, among others. The Brazilian Terrier was provisionally recognized by the FCI in 1995 and in 2007 it was subject to official recognition. The last valid breed standard was published in June 2018.

Temperament of Brazilian Terrier

The temperament of the Terrier Brasileiro corresponds to the typical terrier temperament. The small dog is very lively, active and full of life. It enjoys being the center of attention and takes great pleasure in adventure and exercise. It loves spending time with people, usually gets along well with children and is very playful. Due to its tendency to yap, it is quite suitable as a watchdog. Since this dog breed is very alert and trusting, it likes to spend time around you and doesn't like to be left alone for long periods of time.

Husbandry and use

When keeping the Brazilian Terrier, there are a few things you should keep in mind. If you haven't had a dog before, a terrier is not the best choice as a starter dog. While these small dogs are very trusting and easy to care for, they still need plenty of activity and your experienced and consistent training. Terriers often have a mind of their own and are not as easy to train as other dog breeds. This is also true for the Brazilian Terrier, which is why it is important to start training your Brazilian early. If you set clear rules and boundaries while the dog is still a puppy, the Brazilian Terrier will be a loyal companion who won't cause any trouble. What many people do not know is that these small dogs are very well suited for dog sports. You can train with your dog in popular sports, agility and flyball.

Terrier Brasileiro breed description

The Brazilian Terrier is a compact and lively dog. Its body proportions are harmonious and the small terrier is slenderly built. The square build with its rounded outer lines is characteristic. These round contour lines distinguish it from other terrier species, such as the Fox Terrier. The coat of the Brazilian Terrier is short and smooth. It lies very close to the body, but it is not cuddly soft, but rather rough. On the inside of the limbs, the head, the ears and the underside of the neck the coat is finer and less dense.
