Chart Polski Breed description: Character & Co
Chart Polski
Facts & Origin
The Polish Greyhound - brave and gentle.
In former times it hunted hares, foxes and wolves. Today it is a gentle family dog.
About the breed
The Polish Greyhound is also called 'Chart Polski'. It is listed by the FCI under group 10 of sighthounds, in section 3 of short-haired sighthounds. The Chart Polski is a hunting dog.
The history: the hunting dog of the nobility
The Polish Greyhound probably originally goes back to the Asian greyhound Saluki, with which it also has some similarities.
Already in the 13th century the greyhound is mentioned. Representations on paintings show that he still looks very much like it used to.
It was popular with the nobility. It was used for hunting on horseback.
When hunting, the Chart Polski had to let go of the game immediately on a horn signal, i.e. it had to be extremely obedient.
After the 2nd World War the Polish Greyhound was very rare. In order not to let the gene pool become too small, other sighthound species were crossed in, but this did not change the Polish Greyhound very much.

Attitude, character and temperament of the breed
The nature: persevering and friendly
The Polish Greyhound is considered intelligent, persevering and courageous, which can be explained by its hunting dog past. It acts very independently and has a strong hunting instinct.
In its family it is friendly and gentle, it likes to be with his people. It bonds very closely with its handler. For a greyhound he is easy to train. Towards other dogs he is quite self-confident.
Education: willing to learn and uncomplicated
The Polish Greyhound likes to learn and is willing to learn, so it is not difficult to train. If you are consistent from the beginning, it can become extremely obedient. Its pronounced hunting instinct can cause problems.
Use: Hunting dog or coursing
No matter how the Chart Polski is worked: It should be allowed to run.
- As a hunting dog, the Chart Polski is used for hunting on sight. He rushes after the game he has discovered. In doing so, he shows extreme hunting zeal and great speed. It is traditionally used for hunting hares, but also big game. In Germany this kind of hunting is forbidden.
- As a sport dog, the Polish Greyhound is especially suitable for coursing. These sighthound races take place in an open field, where a dummy hare is pursued.
- If the Chart Polski is well exercised by regular running, it also makes an excellent, well-mannered companion dog that loves its caregiver and accepts the rest of the family in a friendly manner.

Health and breeding information
Health: the robust one
For a sighthound the Chart Polski is extremely robust. Breed-typical diseases are not known. The life expectancy is 10 to 12 years.
Care: run, run, run
The Chart Polski is easy to care for. Of course you should keep an eye on its teeth and clean them either with appropriate snacks or with a dog toothbrush. Besides that, eyes and ears, claws and paws need to be checked.
The coat is not very high-maintenance, only the trousers on the hind legs require a little more effort to brush.
The Chart Polski wants to run above all. And you should satisfy that need. Walks are nice, but they are not enough. Running to the bike or to the horse is better. It's perfect if you let it go to the track regularly.
Breeding
In Germany the breeding of the Polish Greyhound is supervised by the "Deutscher Windhundzucht- und Rennverband e.V. (DWZRV)".
