The Manchester Terrier is listed as FCI standard number 71 and belongs to group 3 "Terriers" and section 1 "High-legged Terriers". Thus it is a recognized dog breed. What is the origin of the Manchester Terrier?
The Manchester Terrier has its origin in Great Britain, as the name already indicates, which is the English city of Manchester. Its ancestors are considered to be the so-called "Black and Tan Terriers" from the late 18th century, which were kept as hunting and farm dogs, especially to drive away rats, a function that also flourished around 1900 in industrialized northern England. For this reason, it was also dubbed a "rattler". In the past, bets were placed. According to one legend, it eliminated 100 in a matter of minutes. Its history goes back to the late Elizabethan age. Several terrier breeds emerged from it, including the Manchester Terrier. Equally involved in the creation of the Manchester Terrier as we know it today was the crossbred breed of the Old English White Terrier. As early as 1837, an attempt was made by Thomas Bell to divide it into different groups. In the late 19th century, Manchester acted as a stronghold for the breeding of the Manchester Terrier. At the same time the Terrier made it to Germany for breeding. There it was mainly kept by the rich to show luxury. After a breeding recession, specimens began to reappear in Germany in 1971.

From the exterior the Manchester Terrier reminds strongly of the Pinscher. Nevertheless, it is of gentler stature than the Pinscher. Its short and smooth coat is pitch black, has a certain sheen, and is close lying on the body. Since the Terrier hardly sheds, it is ideal for allergy sufferers. In addition, its coat shows the so-called mahogany-like tan color richly. It is characterized by conspicuous muscles and at the same time by elegant and graceful grace. Its muzzle is long and has the shape of a wedge. The skull is flat. The eyes are black and have the shape of almonds. The ears with a V-shape point forward and are set high. The tail becomes narrower from the beginning to the end and must not be carried over the back. There are black markings on the toes. It is recommended to comb the coat at least once a week and to remove hair from the pads of the toes from time to time.
