Ancestry and origin of the Cursinu

The Cursinu originates from Corsica, France. It is assumed that it descends from earlier hunting dogs that were used to hunt wild boar (so-called Saupackers). The Cursinu is also well suited as a guard dog.

Breed characteristics and temperament

The Cursinu is a dog breed not recognized by the FCI. In its home country, the breed has been recognized by the French umbrella organization Société Centrale Canine (SCC) since 2003 and is listed in the breed standard there in Group 5 (Spitz and primitive type dogs), Section 7 (primitive type - dogs for hunting use) without working test.

News/Active

These intelligent dogs are very territorial and fiercely defend their territory. They are suspicious of strangers, but loyal to their owners. Towards foreign dogs they behave unfriendly and intolerant.

Husbandry and education

These versatile dogs can be used as:

  • Herding dog
  • Hunting dog
  • Watchdog
  • guard dog

Cursinus are very active working dogs that need athletic, dynamic owners to meet their great need for exercise. They need to be taken for long walks every day. If the Cursinu is not kept busy and exercised enough, it can become destructive. It is less suitable as a family dog. But with good training and early socialization, there may be exceptions. Then it is a very good watchdog who instinctively protects the members of its family. Towards children it is usually patient and cautious, as long as they treat it with respect. At home the dog is rather calm, but outside it lets its temperament run free. It is suitable for owners with dog experience who can handle the dog confidently. For the attitude in a city apartment the dogs are however conceivably badly suitable.

Care and nutrition

The care is uncomplicated. It is sufficient to simply brush the dog regularly hair loss. Hair loss is kept within limits, but is more pronounced in times of coat change, twice a year. The diet does not require any special knowledge either. Good dry or wet food is sufficient for the Cursinu.

Things to know about the Cursinu

To buy a Cursinu you will have little success in Germany. The breed is probably not bred here. In the largest umbrella organization for dog breeding and dog sports in Germany, the VDH, the breed is not listed. The most likely way to get a representative of this breed is probably during a holiday on Corsica. For example in an animal shelter. But there are some rules to follow. At least 30 days before departure the dogs must have been vaccinated against rabies. Furthermore, the dogs need an identification number and a pet passport for identification. You can get both from a veterinarian authorized within the EU. If you have taken care of everything on the spot, there should be no obstacles to your dog's entry into Germany. The Cursinu is also not listed in Germany.

Permissible coat colors are fawn tabby, sandy sooty, or black with fawn or sandy markings. A white or white spotted chest, which sometimes occurs, is undesirable in breeding.
