The friendly hunting dog from Sweden: The Hamiltonstövare

The good-natured, social hunting and companion dog of Swedish descent owes its name to Count Hamilton, its creator. He was recognized in 1955 by the FCI in the section of the medium-sized running dogs and is to be seen because of his people-friendly nature meanwhile also here more and more frequently, although he is bred in the German-speaking countries still little.

Origin of the Hamiltonstövare

The history of the Hamiltonstövare begins with the end of the hunting privilege of the Swedish nobility around 1789, which brought an increased need for hunting dogs, because now also the Swedish population was increasingly engaged in hunting. Because of this development, Count Adolf Patrick Hamilton felt compelled to create a new breed. The Hamiltonstövare was created from crosses of English Foxhound, Harrier, Beagle and German Hounds and is still bred mainly in the country of origin. From 1968, the animals were also imported to England, where they slowly gained a foothold and from where they finally spread throughout Europe. Today Hamiltonstövare belong to the most popular companion dogs of the Europeans and are not to be excluded also as hunting dogs any more.

What are typical diseases of the Hamiltonstövare?

Hamiltonstövare are very robust dogs in terms of health. Their breeding is very untouched, which is why they are not very susceptible to hereditary diseases. However, as with other breeds, it is important to take good care of them and keep regular checkups with your veterinarian, as well as get the required vaccinations. You should also not neglect ear care, as dogs with droopy ears tend to suffer from ear diseases more often than dogs with prick ears.

Breeding of the Hamiltonstövare, breeder and costs

If you have decided to buy a Hamiltonstövare after much consideration, it is still quite difficult to find the right breeder in this country. Although the dog is already quite popular in Europe, it is still little bred in Germany and in the neighboring countries. The breed is bred in Europe mainly in Sweden, but also in the United Kingdom. Only a few German breeders offer their puppies for sale from time to time. Due to the small number of breeders in the German-speaking area, it is not possible to make a statement about the price, but if you are interested in a puppy, you will certainly find one on the Internet via Swedish websites with private breeders.
