General information about the Blue Gascony Griffon

The French dog breed Griffon bleu de Gascogne is assigned to FCI group 6 and section 1.2, under standard number 32. The running dog is also often referred to as the Blue Gascogne Griffon and it is one of the dogs of the Southwest, also called "Chiens du Midi". This group includes, among others, various Bracken and running dogs, in whose veins flows exclusively purebred French blood. The dogs grow between 48 and 57 cm tall, with an average weight of 29 kg. The French hunting dogs are very lively and outgoing dogs that will enchant you with their affection.

Origin and history

The Blue Gascony Griffon has its origin in the Pyrenees and the entire southwest of France. It was used there as a traditional hunting dog and was selectively bred according to its function as early as the Middle Ages. In the hunt the medium sized dog acted alone or in a pack as a hunter or tracker. This dog breed was threatened with extinction for a very long time, but by crossing with other dog breeds, the genes of the Griffon bleu de Gascogne could be preserved and the performance of the hunting dogs could be optimized. The pedigree of the cheerful hunter is marked by breeds such as the Petit Blue de Gascogne, the St. Hubertus dog and various Griffons. In 1963, the Griffon bleu de Gascogne, known today, was finally recognized.

Griffon Bleu de Gascogne Breed description

The appearance of the medium sized hunting dog is one of strength and robustness. This breed is most likely to catch your eye with its rough textured coat. The Griffon bleu de Gascogne's large floppy ears are also very distinctive and accentuate its face, which is also notable for its thick eyebrows. If you are looking for a cuddly cuddly dog, the Griffon bleu de Gascogne is not a suitable partner for you. Although it is very cuddly, its coat is hard, shaggy and rough. It is short to medium in length and is black and white spotted in most cases. The eponymous slate blue sheen gives the dogs something magical and elegant.
