Austrian Black and Tan Hound Breed description: Character & Co
Austrian Black and Tan Hound
Facts & Origin
What is the origin of Austrian Black and Tan Hound?
The ancestors of the Austrian Black and Tan Hound go back to the oldest dogs in the world. According to unconfirmed traditions, the running dogs originate from Egypt. Here animals were already known thousands of years ago, which resembled today's Bracken with their hanging ears. Conjectures assume that they finally reached the Mediterranean area and spread from here all over Europe. Already 2,500 years ago, the Celts valued the excellent hunters and brought them on their journeys to France, Britain and the Rhineland. This is where the historical name Kettenbracke comes from, which summarizes old running dog breeds. Animals with an excellent nose like the Austrian Black and Tan Hound were essential for survival at that time. They helped in the procurement of food. The value of a good hunting dog at that time is described in the 1,000-year-old legal text Lex Baiuwariorum: It states that scent hounds were worth more than a horse. In the 19th century the Bracken were finally separated into different breeds. At that time the Brandlbracke was known as the Österreichische Glatthaarbracke. In 1884 the breed was finally registered in the Austrian Dog Breeding Book. Exactly 112 years passed until the international dog association FCI also accepted it as an independent breed.

If you are thinking about buying a Kärntner Bracke puppy, be aware that it is a hunting dog from heart and soul. At home your four-legged friend is characterized by his level-headed, calm nature. He likes children and proves to be good-natured and gentle towards them. As soon as you leave the house and the pelt-nose takes up a track, it becomes the attentive hunter. No terrain seems to be too impassable for her. They accompany their owners into high alpine terrain and are talented climbers. In thunderstorms as well as in storms and driving snow they keep their calm nature. They courageously go in search of wild boars and other animals. Because of their excellent sense of direction, they always find their way back to their starting point. The Austrian Black and Tan Hound is an ideal companion for those who love nature and go out in all weathers. The breed is ideal for hunters, where it proves its worth especially in tracking. The breed is tracking loud and always shows where it is. In addition, Austrian Black and Tan Hound are extraordinarily cooperative: they orient themselves to their owner and need clear rules and consistent leadership. Very typical for the Brandlbracke are the two red spots above the eyes. It almost seems as if the animals do not have two eyes, but four. That is the reason why they are sometimes called "Vieräugl". Historical myths attribute supernatural powers to four-eyed dogs, by the way. Compared to other Bracken breeds, the Brandlbracke is taller. The breed standard describes the body as "medium sized, elongated and elastic". The tail of the Austrian Black and Tan Hound is lowered downwards when running, when it picks up a scent, it rises steeply upwards.

The basic colour is black, red and sharply defined markings adorn the quadrupeds. Experts call this typical colouring "brand" in technical jargon. The spots on the black background are light to dark brown. The markings extend over the lower part of the legs over the chest, also the muzzle is brown at the bottom and on both sides.
