The ancestors of the Austrian Black and Tan Hound go back to the oldest dogs in the world. According to unconfirmed traditions, the running dogs originate from Egypt. Here animals were already known thousands of years ago, which resembled today's Bracken with their hanging ears. Conjectures assume that they finally reached the Mediterranean area and spread from here all over Europe. Already 2,500 years ago, the Celts valued the excellent hunters and brought them on their journeys to France, Britain and the Rhineland. This is where the historical name Kettenbracke comes from, which summarizes old running dog breeds. Animals with an excellent nose like the Austrian Black and Tan Hound were essential for survival at that time. They helped in the procurement of food. The value of a good hunting dog at that time is described in the 1,000-year-old legal text Lex Baiuwariorum: It states that scent hounds were worth more than a horse. In the 19th century the Bracken were finally separated into different breeds. At that time the Brandlbracke was known as the Österreichische Glatthaarbracke. In 1884 the breed was finally registered in the Austrian Dog Breeding Book. Exactly 112 years passed until the international dog association FCI also accepted it as an independent breed.
