The Aussiedor is a mixed breed resulting from the crossing of the Australian Shepherd and the Labrador. They are known for their gentleness, playfulness and intelligence. This robust, large dog with a broad face and drooping ears is suitable for families with children of all ages due to its loving disposition. In general, it forms a strong bond with its family members. Because of its size, it is also considered a good watchdog and a deterrent to unwanted visitors.
The history of the hybrid Aussiedor breed
These hybrids are among the newer breeds bred by Aussiedor breeders, so their history cannot be traced back in detail, but that of their parents is. The breed of the Australian Shepherd originated in the USA, the name is based on the fact that its ancestors probably came from Australia. This herding dog gained popularity when it was shown in films and rodeos several times, today it is used as a guide dog, therapy dog, drug dog, search and rescue dog. The Labrador, however, originates in Newfoundland and is a variation of the Newfoundland dog, which makes it an excellent swimmer and drug dog.

Attitude, character and temperament of the breed

They tend to fixate on their owner, which may result in them feeling neglected when left alone for a long time. They are also very protective and cautious towards strangers and will warn their owner if they sense danger. Caution is advised with children, since their ancestors were hunting and shepherd dogs, they might feel responsible of keeping their "herd" together, which he does by gently biting them. Fortunately, they are very intelligent dogs, they learn quickly and are family dogs that are relatively easy to train.

Acquisition of an Aussiedor and health problems
If you want to buy an Aussiedor, you should of course look for a reputable Aussiedor breeder. The price range varies from 750 to 1500 euros. Aussiedor puppies are rather unsuitable for first-time dog owners. It is better to feed the puppies more often during the day to avoid bloating, adult dogs should be given two meals a day. Aussiedor puppies should not overexercise either, so that misalignments of their hips and elbows are avoided. Other genetically inherited health problems include epilepsy and drug resistance to multiple medications.
Attention is also required in regards to specimens with the colour MERLE.
Appearance and care of an Aussiedor
Their characteristics include a broad, strong build, lop ears and a relatively wide head. Their coat can have many colours: black, brown, golden, bi-coloured, tri-coloured, spotted, merle-coloured or striped. Their fur structure ranges from smooth to wavy, the hair is very dense and water-repellent. Aussiedors are pretty low-maintanance, you can ensure a healthy coat with regular, weekly grooming. Otherwise, these dogs don't really shed a lot and are considered to be easy to train.
