The Field Spaniel - a faithful companion with a lot of fun in life
General information about the Field Spaniel
The British Field Spaniel is assigned to FCI group 8 and section 2, under standard number 123. The Field Spaniel is closely related to the Cocker Spanieland also has a medium length, smooth coat. The Field Spaniel belongs to the group of retrieving, water and fetch dogs and originated in the United Kingdom, where it was used as a hunting dog. These dogs reach a weight of 18-25 kg, with a height at the withers of about 46 cm.
Origin and history of the Field Spaniel
The Field Spaniel bears its name because in England in the 19th century all Spaniels were divided according to their function. So there were Water Spaniels and Field Spaniels, in German "Land" Spaniels. Among the Field Spaniels are also the Springer Spaniel, the English Cocker Spaniel and the Sussex Spaniel. The small Land Spaniel is very closely related to the Cocker Spaniel. In the past, the British crossed all Spaniel types with each other until they were finally distinguished as individual types in the late 19th century. The Field Spaniel was used a lot for hunting, which is due to its gift as a retriever. The existence of the Field Spaniel was enormously threatened by the Second World War, which is why fewer and fewer specimens have been registered by the English Kennel Club to date.

Grooming
Since the Field Spaniel, like many of his relatives, has a relatively long and dense coat, you will need to brush your dog regularly. Especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors with your dog, it is important to remove dirt and tangles from the coat. Since the coat is always growing back, it needs to be trimmed regularly.
Breeding the Field Spaniel
Since this breed is rather rare today, the purchase usually happens through a few detours. The Field Spaniel breeding is very rare and there are hardly any breeders left. Well known is the registered breeder Ulf Baumann, who breeds Field Spaniels among others in Belau. It is recommended that you also ask in animal shelters to help Field Spaniels in need.
Diseases typical for the breed
The Field Spaniel is affected by hereditary hip dysplasia and various eye diseases. However, these diseases are less common in dogs from a reputable breed.
