General information about the Field Spaniel

The British Field Spaniel is assigned to FCI group 8 and section 2, under standard number 123. The Field Spaniel is closely related to the Cocker Spanieland also has a medium length, smooth coat. The Field Spaniel belongs to the group of retrieving, water and fetch dogs and originated in the United Kingdom, where it was used as a hunting dog. These dogs reach a weight of 18-25 kg, with a height at the withers of about 46 cm.

Origin and history of the Field Spaniel

The Field Spaniel bears its name because in England in the 19th century all Spaniels were divided according to their function. So there were Water Spaniels and Field Spaniels, in German "Land" Spaniels. Among the Field Spaniels are also the Springer Spaniel, the English Cocker Spaniel and the Sussex Spaniel. The small Land Spaniel is very closely related to the Cocker Spaniel. In the past, the British crossed all Spaniel types with each other until they were finally distinguished as individual types in the late 19th century. The Field Spaniel was used a lot for hunting, which is due to its gift as a retriever. The existence of the Field Spaniel was enormously threatened by the Second World War, which is why fewer and fewer specimens have been registered by the English Kennel Club to date.
