Hardly any dog polarises the world of dog lovers more than the Bull Terrier. Some people are captured by them and enthusiastic about them from the beginning. Others want nothing to do with them. In the worst case they are even afraid of this little powerhouse. The reasons for this are different ones. Their striking appearance does not agree with everyone. Besides, the little clown has a story of its own and is considered list dog. This classifies them as a dangerous dog breed. But this dog is rightly popular with many dog owners. If you find out more information about the Bull Terrier and their breeding, you will see why.

The history of the Bullterrier

The Bull Terrier has a long and very imprinting history. In the Midlands of England in the 17th century people were amused with animal fights. For the dog fights a small, agile and powerful breed was needed. It should also have an optimal muzzle for biting. The ideal dog was created by crossing

  • the English Bulldog
  • the White English Terrier and
  • the Dalmatian.

As a result, the Bull Terrier was born. In the 19th century the banning of dog fights followed in England. From then on, dogs hunted badgers and killed rats. At the end of the century, the breed was officially recognised. The then white bred dog became the darling of the English nobility. Only after the end of the 2nd World War breeders started to breed the Bull Terrier in other colours as well. Today there are several colour variations and also two different sizes. Both the Standard Bullterrier and the Miniature Bullterrier are independent breeds. Both are recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

Their appearance is very individual and polarising. This is not what their character is like. The Bully is friendly, funny and nice. This dog does not easily lose its cool. They stand out time and time again with their brave demeanour. These kind of characteristics are preferred in breeding. The Bullterrier is an absolutely family-friendly dog. They love their family more than anything and like to spend their time with them. At the same time they understand how to provide for a good mood like hardly any other four-legged friend. These dogs are real entertainers, similar to a little clown. To children they are affectionate and very quiet. However, they can occasionally act a bit turbulent. However, this is mostly simply a sign of joy and fun and not at all angry or aggressive. Aggression is absolutely undesirable in Bull Terrier breeding.

Who is the Bullterrier suitable for

The Bull Terrier is a dog that needs consistent training. They are therefore not suitable for everyone. You should have enough self-confidence and treat your Bullterrier puppy in a very sensitive way. With this animal unpleasant situations can not be avoided. The reason for this is the lack of understanding by other people.

They always have the image a of an "aggressive and bad dog".

Patience and love for your dog are essential here. You have to face the inappropriate statements with a lot of self-confidence and patience. The funny and active dog is not a dog for lovers of extreme sports. They do like to accompany their owners on a run or bike ride. However, this only in moderation and with purpose. They are also not not keen on dog-dancing. Agility and Flyball will also not become their favourite disciplines. The Bully is perfectly suited as a watchdog though. As a wonderful family dog they will participate in any mischief.

The Bull Terrier breeding must be serious

If you want to buy a Bull Terrier, you should put great importance to finding a serious Bull Terrier breeding. A healthy Bully will reach an age of 10 to 14 years. Breed-related diseases are negligible. However, with white coloured animals you have to make sure that the Bull Terrier puppy is not deaf. A good breeder will organise a hearing test early on. Make sure that your Bullterrier is fed a healthy, appropriate diet and that it gets enough exercise. These animals tend to be overweight.

The purchase of a Bull Terrier must be well considered

Before you want to save or buy a Bull Terrier, inform yourself very well about the existing breed lists. In Austria the Bullterrier is listed as a potentially dangerous dog in

  • Vienna
  • Lower Austria and
  • Vorarlberg.

There are various conditions associated with this. Also the dog tax can be significantly higher than for a dog that does not appear on the Bull Terrier list. Since breed specific lists also exist in other EU countries, a holiday abroad with a Bull Terrier is not always easy. Due to entry bans it is sometimes even impossible. These conditions are also the reason why many of these dogs end up in shelters. So think carefully before rescuing a Bull Terrier.

Here are some conditions a Bull Terrier must fulfill. See the existing points as follows:

  • The Bull Terrier usually reaches a height of about 45-55 centimetres measured at the withers.
  • Its weight is about 25-30 kilograms. The breed standard does not specify any minimum or maximum figures here. It is much more important that the dog is strong and correspondingly muscular.
  • The most striking feature of this animal is certainly the ram head, also called downface.
  • The jaw must be even and strong.
  • The eyes of the Bullies are also a striking feature. They are small, triangular, very dark to almost black and sit obliquely on the head.
  • The nose is black.
  • Like the eyes, the ears are small, narrow and close to another.
  • The long, curved neck is, like the dog in general, very muscular and becomes broader towards the shoulders.
  • The Bullterrier has a stocky body with a strikingly deep chest.
  • The tail is short and positioned low.
  • The coat of the Bully is short and smooth. In these days he may also be black, red, fawn, tricoloured or brindle. If the dog is white, it may show coloured spots only on the head.
