What is a Retro Pug?

Retro Pug breeders specialise in breeding pugs that do not suffer from breathing problems and their consequences, since normal pugs almost always struggle with this due to their extremely over-bred short nose. That is why pugs have practically no physical stamina, are stressed easily and can only cool their body temperature down to a limited extent by panting - they are also known as "agony breed". Retro Pug breeders also aim to preserve the pug's positive qualities. In order to achieve this, pugs were initially paired with the agile Parson Russle Terrier, since there were almost no healthy pugs available. This is referred to as reverse breeding as opposed to cross breeding. Nowadays, the proportion of foreign blood in the Retro Pug is only 10% or less, so superficially and character-wise they are a type of pug.

News/Active

Similar to the pug, the Retro Pug is affectionate, uncomplicated and very lovable. They are pleasant companions that radiate their joy for life, they are real family dogs and people lovers. In addition, they are considered easy to socialise with other dogs, partly because of their high stimulus threshold, which is of course only a given if they have had a good upbringing.

Who is the Retro Pug suitable for?

Since they are very family-orientated, it is important to shower them with positive stimuli from an early age, so the puppies can grow in confidence. Even if they are not particularly top athletes, they are at least able to walk and run on a regular basis with their adapted bodies that are more suitable for exercise. Like any other dog too, you should do more than just let your Retro Pug out for basic needs. You should pay special attention to your dog's diet as they tend to be overweight. These little dogs often overestimate themselves which can get them into dangerous situations. The spaces between their fat rolls are prone to develop skin diseases and irritations, their big eyes are very sensitive, but in comparison to the standard pug these problems are not as highly developed.

Buying a Retro Pug

It is, of course, important to contact a responsible Retro Pug breeder or a pedigree dog association who follow strict breeding standards. You might have to wait a few months to find a Retro Pug since good breeders only have one or two litters per year and the puppies should stay with their mother for at least 12 weeks after birth. You should be careful when buying a Retro Pug though since there are many pug breeds present that have been paired with other long-nosed dog breeds, so-called mixed breeds without pedigree, where you have no guarantee of what kind of dog you end up with. A Retro Pug costs around 700 euros.

In comparison to a normal pug, their slightly longer nose enables them to breathe better, their physique is more agile and their head is not as round. Their legs are also longer and they are a bit bigger than the ordinary pug. Simply said, it makes the original breed look like it really has been overbred. Their coat is short, smooth, shiny and soft, possible colours range from black to beige, gray to white. Nevertheless, pug lovers still get the features they admire so much, when buying a Retro Pug: protruding eyes, thick nasal wrinkles, fat rolls, a short snout and a curled tail.
