What is the origin of the Basset Hound?

The name of the breed already says a lot about its origin: the name Basset derives from French and means 'low running dogs'. "Hound" in English means as much as 'chasing' and suggests that this breed is a passionate hunter. In France, Bracken with short legs enjoyed great popularity. On the British island, however, they disappeared increasingly in the Middle Ages. And this despite the fact that already William Shakespeare allegedly described this dog in his work "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Experts assume that its ancestors were French Basset d'Artois. The founder of the breed is Lord Galway, who imported a pair of Bassets from France in 1866. A little later, Lord Onslow bought a whole litter and in the following years the Beagle was crossed in. Around 1890, a real storm began to sweep over the breed: By this time there were already about 2,000 Bassets, all of which resulted from only 20 parents. Since inbreeding caused massive health problems, the Bloodhound came into play. The breed became known for its numerous appearances in movies and television. Among other things, it assisted the inspector in solving tricky cases in the American television series "Columbo". In addition, a US shoe company used the breed as an advertising icon: since the 1950s, Hush Puppies have stood for wearing comfort and cosiness, which also distinguishes the Basset Hounds.

What are the breed characteristics of the Basset Hound?

Hardly any dog lover can resist the trusting look of a Basset Hound. The four-legged friend radiates calmness in every situation. Despite their short legs they are surprisingly manoeuvrable, although they are not as fast as other hunting dogs. With their excellent sense of smell, they were able to track down game even in dense undergrowth thanks to their small body size which lead to their reputation of being a talented bloodhound until this day.

What are the typical character traits of the Basset Hound?

In the last decades the Basset Hound has advanced from a hunting dog to a family dog. They are distinguished by their calm and friendly nature. If you are interested in buying a Basset Hound, you should sort out daycare for them. The four-legged friend does not like to be left alone for a long time. All the more he enjoys spending time with its humans. They love being the centre of attention and like to join you everywhere you go. It is a good idea to start training your Basset Hound puppy early on. They are very stubborn and sometimes prefer to go their own way instead of following their owner. Your furry friend will gladly accompany you on walks and they like to use their excellent nose while doing so. Tracking games are an enjoyable activity for them.

The four-legged friend also gets along with children very well. The well-balanced Basset Hound's temperament also makes them a good companion for older people.

What are typical Basset Hound diseases?

Unfortunately, attempts to intensify the typical wrinkles of the Basset Hounds have led to some health problems:

  • Ectropium: This means that the eyelids are pulled down so much that the inside is visible.
  • Spinal disc problems
  • Ear infections

It is best to invest time into checking the dog's long floppy ears regularly. Running around may cause friction between the ears and the rest of the body, which may cause irritation. Dirt can be removed in a gentle way with a special cleanser. Especially in summer, heat accumulates underneath the long ears: This promotes the development of inflammation. Like the Dachshund, the Basset Hound should not climb stairs in order not to put strain on their long back.

What should be considered in regards to Basset Hound breeding?

When you visit the breeder take a close look at the pedigree. Have a look at the parents and pay attention to their wrinkles and body length. Exaggerated breeding can lead to health problems. A reputable breeder will willingly give you information about the breeding and will be a competent contact person for you after the move to your new home. A Basset costs about 800-1000 Euros.

The Basset Hound stands out due to its sturdy build and long back. The breed standard defines a slight wrinkling on the cheeks and forehead, which the dog owes to its ancestors, the Bloodhounds. When they tilt their head forward, they look like they are frowning. Basset Hounds can be tri-coloured black-white-brown, bi-coloured lemon-white and also other colours are permitted. Your four-legged friend's coat is thick and smooth. Grooming proves to be unproblematic: Regular brushing is sufficient.

The short coat of the Basset Hound is very easy to care for. With a soft brush dead hairs can be removed, a procedure your pet will probably enjoy.
