Dog kennel: building, buying, advantages, tips

Johann by Johann, Johann has been a dog dad since 2018 and a dog fan since 1986.

Dog kennel - why you need one and what it is abused, what it costs.

It is not possible or desirable for every household to have a dog living in their own home. Dogs that live on farms are often not seen as the animal to cuddle, but are used as work animals, for example, as a hunting animal. Therefore, dog kennels are bought or built so that the dog has its own living space.

Dog kennels are often abused

In many cases, the animals are confined in such a kennel in a very small space, which is not allowed by law. Some people who earn their money with animal breeding keep their four-legged friends under bad conditions in order to spend little money and to keep as many animals as possible and to sell them later. Therefore, it is especially important for you, if you want to buy a puppy, to pay attention to their attitude.

If you want to build your own kennel, there are clear guidelines that you must follow.

Build dog kennel

In order to keep animals in a manner appropriate to their species, the appearance and condition of the enclosure are regulated by law.

The appearance and the condition:

  • Your dog must have an area of at least 15m² free space.

  • If you have a second dog, you must provide another 5m² of free space.

  • Enclosure must be at least 1.8 meters high

  • Liquids must be able to drain off

  • There must be no risk of injury

If your bitch gives birth to puppies, each puppy needs an additional 5m² of space from eight weeks onwards. Should you have a kennel in the kennel, this does not count towards the free space.

Furnishings:

To protect your dog from the elements, special care should be taken to ensure that the main weather side of the kennel is enclosed and that there are shelters from the sun to provide each dog with its own shade. Therefore, it is best to provide your four-legged friend with a doghouse.

In addition, the door must be able to open inwards and be equipped with a rotary knob. Also, your dog must not come in contact with electricity. At least one side of the kennel must be open and lit with natural light.

If you have multiple kennels, it must be possible for your animals to see each other, unless the animals do not get along. In addition, the dog must have its own resting area, made of heat-insulating materials.

Buy a dog kennel

If you want to save yourself the construction, you can buy a dog kennel. You can find them in almost every hardware store in various designs and are available from around 250 €.

A tip: Buy the kennel used, then you save a lot of money.

Here you must also make sure that the legal requirements are met and your four-legged friend is kept species-appropriate.

Important:

Your dog must be able to run freely at least once a day and must not be permanently locked up in the kennel.
